Beneath everything you have built and become, there is a version of you that predates all of it.
That version was interested in things for their own sake, and paid attention to people without an agenda.
Most people who have been building for a long time have lost contact with that version of themselves. The ambition came on gradually and the performance requirements grew with it, until the identity became whatever the career and the family required. The person underneath got quieter and then quieter still, until on most days they cannot hear that person at all.
Going back would not help, because that version knew less than you do now and had not yet earned what you have. What it had was less to protect, so it could be in a conversation without already half-forming the response, and sit in a moment without calculating what it was worth. That is still in you, and it has become harder to reach.
After I lost my partner and the life we had built, the performance went with it, and I recognised someone I had not been in contact with for years. The drive and the curiosity were still there, and what was left felt closer to who I had been before I started building.
The leaders who do the deepest work in this practice almost always describe the same moment: they stop recognising the person they have become and start recognising the one they were before the building started.
That person is still there, under a lot of what you have been carrying. If this is resonating and you are ready to take a deeper look at that, a complimentary discovery call is the starting point.
